This week was a big data week for Serena and I. I spent about 6 hours sorting through images taken from our HAPO weekend surveys on 9/24 and 9/25. On Wednesday, the conditions were too rough to go out on a HAPO survey, so Serena and I spent 10am-3:00pm setting up the osteology lab at the Island and Oceans Building. On Thursday 9/29, I presented my seminar on the effects of Naval sonar and seismic activity on cetaceans. It went very well, and I was proud of it being my first presentation here.
On Friday 9/30/22 the Inner Bay trip was split into two groups. I was on the second trip 12:30pm-3:30pm. We went by Gull Island and saw between 5 and 12 harbor porpoises. Some images of possible mating display were captured by Libby and Jess. I will need to collect these images from the drive and go through them to add to the catalog. Luckily, the old HAPO catalog was found, so Serena and I will create a new one based off that log. On Saturday 10/1 I went to the Kenai River to do beluga monitoring and eDNA water filtering. This was the first time the belugas had stayed in the river the whole day, through the different tide cycles in 3 years according to Theresa. We also caught video and photogrpahic proof of a young hunter shooting 2 ducks while being within 150 yards of the endangered Cook Inlet belugas.
On Sunday 10/2, I spent from 2:00pm-5:00pm sorting through images from the Inner Bay trip, and created a draft HAPO survey and ID guide for Wednesday boat trips. Serena peer edited this draft, and we will go over it with Marc tomorrow 8/3 during our 1:30pm meeting, and will send the Debbie as well if she can't be there for the meeting.
